The Auburn Police Department is a
Massachusetts Civil Service Agency as
defined in Chapter 31 of the Massachusetts
Civil Service Laws. Candidates are only
eligible for employment as police officers
in Auburn if they have taken a Municipal
Police Entry Level Examination and their
name appears on the list provided by the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts Human
Resources Division Candidates List. At
which time such list is requested, the
candidate will be instructed by The Human
Resources Divisions as to when and where to
appear to affirm their interest in a
position with the Auburn Police Department.

The Auburn Police Department is a

Service position as defined in Chapter 31and
are full time, academy trained employees.
Due to civil service law, anyone not
meeting these criteria will not be
considered for hire. Salary is
commensurate with experience. Auburn
Officers are entitled to Quinn Bill career
incentive.

Certifications in E911, CPR, First
Responder, and LEAPS are preferred but not
required. Excellent communication and people
skills, both written and oral, are a must.
In addition, basic computer knowledge, good
typing skills, and the ability to work under
stressful conditions are required.
Applicants must be willing to work all
shifts, which include weekends and holidays.

The Town of Auburn is bordered by the City
of Worcester and Towns of Millbury,
Leicester, and Oxford. We have 5 State
Highways intersecting the community,
including the Massachusetts Turn Pike,
I-290, I-395, Route 12, and Route 20.
Interstate Rt. 146 terminates nearby. We
currently host 5 major chain hotels and
several smaller motels.
The nighttime residential population of
Auburn is approximately 16,700 people; the
business hours population of Auburn has been
estimated to be closer to 80,000 to a
100,000. This sharp increase is large in
part due to the transient population
traveling through Auburn and large number of
commercial & retail businesses in Auburn.
The Auburn Police Department handles in
excess of 400 calls for service a week in
addition to in access of 300 patrol
initiated activities weekly. In 2005, the
Officers processed over 1000 arrests.
The Auburn Police Department has thirty-one
(31) sworn members and is budgeted for eight
additional patrol positions, eight (8)
full-time civilian dispatchers, and four
Part-Time Dispatchers as well as clerical
personnel. |

The Auburn Police Department hiring and
screening process is a rigorous and entails:
1. Thorough Application Process - this
is the starting point for the perspective
candidate to introduce him or herself to the
agency.
2. Intensive Background Investigation -
includes investigation into finances,
criminal history, truthfulness of applicant
and all other aspects of applicant's life
history to determine suitability for the
position he or she applied for.
3. Interview if a candidate has a
satisfactory result in the background and
application process, the candidate will then
interviewed by members of the Auburn Police
Department Command Staff. In some
cases a second interview may be requested.
At this stage the candidate maybe given a
condition offer of employment, if the
candidate is applying for a police officer
positions, the offer is conditional upon the
completion of the following:
4. Physical
5. Fitness Test
6. Psychological Test
Upon successful completion of the above
tests the candidate will be assigned to
attend a MCJTC Police Academy for up to 26
weeks. If the candidate successfully
completes the Police Academy he or she will
be assigned to Auburn Police Department
Field Training Officers for the next 12
weeks. During this 12-week period the
probationary employee will be provided real
time instruction and performance assessment
to determine suitability as a permanent
police officer in the Town of Auburn. |
